A bit of old-world charm with a modern energy
Dupont Circle is a traffic circle, a park, and a historic district in Washington DC. Noted for its numerous historic buildings and various international embassies, it’s quite the working community. Yet, even with the older architecture and history here, it’s quite the progressive area of DC, making it a desirable place for those looking for a thriving, upscale area with a youthful feel.
Much of the area is home to boutiques, bistros, and museums, but it’s also a fabulous place for living. The Dupont Circle real estate market includes many restored and updated old-world townhomes, apartment buildings, and condos. It’s possible to find beautiful Victorian-style mansions in the area, too. Quite affluent, there are three- and four-story row homes here, along with a number of Richardsonian Romanesque Revival-style homes. Some of the older apartments are larger, much larger than those in nearby areas. It’s less common to find traditional suburban living here and more likely to find standalone mansions dotting the landscape.
Dupont Circle is perhaps one of the most diverse areas of Washington DC. It’s home to many small businesses and known for its gay-owned bistros and bars. It’s a cosmopolitan mix of people, providing a high level of energy around every corner. Residents are welcoming, friendly, and creative. Many who live in this area work in the city but spend time relaxing in the bouquets and taverners in this area after a long day.
The community is quite walkable, too, which allows residents to go shopping along 17th Street. There are a number of historic buildings throughout the area and fabulous upscale restaurants along Connecticut Avenue. The community remains as upscale as its always been.
Whether finding the ideal restaurant, grocery, baker, or the best coffee in the area, Dupont Circle has much to offer. Duke’s Grocery is a staple here. It’s tucked into a historic row house along 17th Street, providing London-inspired cuisine and craft cocktails. There may not be a better choice for fine, upscale Japanese dining in all of Washington, DC than Sushi Taro. Or, for those looking for sophisticated dining with more of an American fare menu, try The Pembroke. It's quite an elegant establishment.
A few other locations are musts in this area, including Dolcezza Gelato, the perfect place to hand out with old-world gelato. Lauriol Plaza is the place to be, especially on its rooftop to catch the game. And that’s just the start of the options here.
Dupont Circle is in the heart of it all, but a few area establishments are simply essential to explore. Fathom Gallery is a flexible-use space that’s often the location for various events throughout the year. It boasts a 1500 square foot rooftop, perfect for weddings. It’s also worth exploring The Black Cat, a local music venue, or taking in a show at Studio Theatre, one that produces a wide range of performances each year.
A tour of The Patterson Mansion is in order for anyone in the area. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places and dates to 1902. Another location to visit is The Whittemore House, a historic and elegant mansion.
